Cee Lo Green is defending his incredibly ill-advised decision to alter the lyric’s to John Lennon’s masterpiece, “Imagine”. Green performed the song on a live New Year’s Eve television performance and he is assuring disgruntled fans that he “meant no disrespect” to the legendary musician.
The “Fuck You” singer received a ton of flack on Twitter.com after he sang performed the song, changing Lennon’s lyric from ”And no religion too” to “And all religion’s true”. Cee Lo Green took to his Twitter to justify his actions after receiving angry messages.
According to Britain’s Daily Mail, in a post which has since been deleted, Green wrote, “Yo I meant no disrespect by changing the lyric guys! I was trying to say a world were u could believe what u wanted that’s all.”
This is a justification that doesn’t make the slight better. “Imagine” is one of the most beloved and inspirational songs of all time and Green imposed his own ideals on the song. Lennon wrote the lyric that way for a reason, and Cee Lo Green changed it to the complete opposite of what Lennon wrote.
