Moviemaker Simon Curtis asked the Blue Valentine star to play the legendary bombshell in without ever seeing her audition but Williams was cautious about taking the role. Curtis eventually won her over but Williams insisted that she play a scene in character for him so that they would both know that she had the chops to do Monroe justice.
Speaking about the Michelle Williams My Week With Marilyn audition, Williams told British Elle magazine, “I said, ‘I want both of us to know that I can do this, I don’t want to be offered this role for any other reason than we know that I’m capable of it.’”
The actress also spoke about the early days of shooting and how she was still nervous and unsure about tackling the role, “I was so scared. I think after the second day, I told them they had to take away my passport because I was a flight risk – I wanted to hop on the next train to the Alps or something and get the hell out because it was terrifying.”
